How Strong Is the Evidence? A Reader’s Guide

A simple hierarchy for judging oral-health supplement research without needing a research degree.

Start with the research question

Evidence strength depends on the outcome being tested. A laboratory study can be excellent for mechanism but weak for predicting whether a consumer product improves a clinical outcome.

A useful hierarchy

1. Systematic reviews and well-conducted trials on the finished product.
2. Randomized trials on matching ingredients, doses and delivery methods.
3. Observational human studies.
4. Laboratory and animal research.
5. Mechanistic theory and testimonials.

Do not confuse hierarchy with certainty

Even a systematic review can conclude that evidence is low quality or inconsistent. Read the conclusion, not just the study type.
